Colour and Pattern: a guide to decorate with confidence

The choice of the colours and patterns it is always very crucial. Often homeowners are afraid to test different palettes and they end up choosing mainly white and black. Although I like a minimalist style, as a child, I was always fascinated by colours and I would use them when trying to memorize something at school. I believe in the colour's therapy as colours can influence our mood.

When decorating a residential room, I believe choosing at least four shades would give a harmonious balance to the space. I usually start with neutral colours as the foundation where I build afterwords my scheme with different colours. One of my favourite palette is greens and yellows. I like green because, according to colour's therapy, it is a calming colour a sort of stress relief. Yellow is instead, the colour of happiness and sunshine... the perfect combination to feel better instantly.

Regarding patterns, I believe they also play an important role in interior design as they add details and something that can capture out attention, when stepping in a new environment. I usually try to alternate a pattern with a plane fabric in order to not overwhelm the space. Try not to have too many different patterns close to each other. Choose floral patterns if you are looking to reach a harmonious, romantic and feminist style. Use geometric patterns when creating a modern and dynamic look. Polka dots are one of my favourite patterns, I think they give a touch of fun and a timeless style. I personally love checks as well, as they remind me of a cozy atmosphere around a fire place in an Alpine cottage. Use patterns for some cushions in your living room, to make it more eye-catching. Dare to try on your bed throw, your armchairs and, why not, on your dining chairs too.

If you felt inspired to try any of these colours or patterns, in the links below you can find some ideas that will help you to complete your scheme. A tip when choosing a pattern is to ask your fabric supplier for a big sample, in order to see in larger scale how it would fit into your design scheme.
